Last night I finished a book that I would never have picked up if I had judged it by its cover although the synopsis had certainly prepared me for something unusual – it essentially says that the story is about a boy, Steve, who has dreams about a wasp queen who might be able to help Steve’s baby brother who is seriously ill. This made me curious but didn’t excite me as it was also clear that the story is in the genre of fantasy/magical realism which is not my personal favourite. However, it proved to be real page turner. Beautifully written although I couldn’t quite believe what I was reading – I really had to resist turning to the last page to have a peak at the ending whilst still several chapters away. When I finished I sat there in a state of disbelief and horror – I was truly scared at some points! Yet it also left me feeling emotional and warm… very odd yet compelling. The title? The Nest by Kenneth Oppel.
