Girl in a classroom at Prep Class At St Mary's Colchester in Essex

Welcome back from the School Library!

27 September 2017

It’s a slightly overdue welcome back from the School Library which has been a busy place since term began with new girls to meet, new books to add and summer reads to gather in.

My own summer reading was very diverse, as planned, but I lost count of my total when I exceeded  15 books! Among the stand-out titles was “Passing for White” by Tanya Landman. It’s a very short book, at just over 100 pages with a shocking and sensitive heart, inspired by the true story of a couple who escaped from slavery in South America in the early 19th Century. The story is told from the perspective of Rosa who is pale-skinned enough to “pass for white” but must pose as a man in order to reach a life of freedom. Highly recommended but for older readers (Year 9 and above) – due to some of the language and content.
