St Mary’s School welcomed a prestigious British Army Band to work with their Lower School and Senior School orchestra members in a one-day workshop.
A group of musicians from the British Army Band Colchester shared their talents with St Mary’s Lower School and Senior School pupils, as young as nine, on Tuesday 21 January through a series of group workshops led by conductor, Musn Robert Jones. After just a few hours of rehearsals, St Mary’s pupil orchestra members joined the Army band to perform a number of pieces including Shackelford Banks (Tale of Wild Mustangs), Coldplay classics and Flowers by Miley Cyrus. The girls were not only inspired by the music, but also by the career pathways and opportunities available within the British Army Band, which were presented to them by Sgt Rafique Dolor.
Mrs Nicola Griffiths, Principal said “The visit from the British Army Band Colchester was a real highlight for us here at St Mary’s. I am extremely proud of how well the Lower School and Senior School orchestra members made the most of the time spent working with the Army’s talented musicians. After just a few hours of rehearsals, the final performances were incredible. At St Mary’s we provide an enlightened, empowering and complete education, designed specifically for girls to thrive. We challenge our girls academically, creatively and physically and this experience was just one of the many opportunities on offer to our pupils.”
