On Saturday we held our first Future Females Careers Fair on International Women’s Day to help empower girls’ futures.
Girls in Year 4 (age 8) through to Year 11 (age 16) from St Mary’s and the wider community attended the event, which aimed to help girls think about their future aspirations and inspire them by opening their eyes to all the future opportunities available. A variety of careers were showcased, including areas or levels where women are underrepresented.
Girls had the opportunity to talk to representatives from a wide range of industries, from interior, textiles and product designers to those working in automotive engineering, tech, medicine and finance. A range of activities were also on offer to give girls an insight into various careers, from forensics and disaster management to script writing and composing. An inspirational closing talk was delivered by The Telegraph’s first female Defence Editor Danielle Sheridan.
Mrs Griffiths, Principal of St Mary’s Colchester said: “We were overwhelmed with the turnout and it was wonderful to see the girls coming away feeling hugely inspired and excited about the opportunities ahead for them. At St Mary’s we aim to encourage girls to see the world as one full of limitless opportunities, to take risks and follow passions, to innovate and lead, in an environment that is free from judgement and stereotypes, and full of respect and support. We are very grateful to all the exhibitors who supported this International Women’s Day event.”
