Prestigious new Scholarship ‘The Principal’s Award’ launched

A new Principal's Award is available for girls at St Mary's School in Colchester

St Mary’s School is proud to announce the launch of a new and prestigious scholarship – the Principal’s Award – an honour designed to celebrate and support exceptional girls who have achieved outstanding success in any field, from sport and the arts to academic excellence and community impact.

The Principal’s Award is the latest addition to St Mary’s already impressive Scholarship programme and will be awarded to girls who not only excel in their chosen field, but who inspire others through their achievements and character. Whether a national sports champion, an award-winning artist or a passionate change-maker in the community, recipients of this accolade will exemplify the core values of St Mary’s: ambitious, bold, compassionate, dynamic, and enquiring.

“We are looking for remarkable individuals who lead by example and who will make a lasting contribution to the life of our school,” said Principal Mrs Nicola Griffiths. “This new award celebrates girls who have demonstrated exceptional ability and impact – and who are true ambassadors for the values we hold dear at St Mary’s.”

The Principal’s Award joins an existing suite of Year 7 Scholarships available at St Mary’s, which includes Academic, STEM, Art, Music, Drama and Sport Scholarships. Also available is the Miss Comrie Scholarship, named in honour of former headmistress Miss Phyllis Comrie (1935–1957), who left a legacy to support outstanding pupils from St Mary’s Lower School in progressing to the Senior School.
Scholars at St Mary’s are role models and leaders within the school community. The Scholarship programme is designed not only to recognise existing talent but to accelerate the development of each scholar’s unique abilities. They are encouraged – and expected – to take full advantage of the wide-ranging educational opportunities offered at St Mary’s, gaining valuable experience and preparing to thrive in a fast-changing world.

There is no financial assessment for St Mary’s Scholarship applicants. All Scholarships are awarded solely on merit and in open competition. There is no set limit to the number that may be offered in one year of entry. Scholarships may attract a partial fee remission, at the discretion of the Principal and on condition that expectations of a Scholar are met.

St Mary’s vision is clear: to empower girls to thrive at school and beyond. With an environment designed specifically for girls – one that is safe, inclusive, and free from judgement – the school equips its pupils with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to see the world as a place of limitless possibility.

To help parents learn more about the Scholarships available, the school is hosting a Scholarship Information Event on Thursday 15 May, 6–7pm, at the Senior School. This will be an opportunity to understand more about the benefits of becoming a scholar at St Mary’s, the requirements, and the application process.
