Celebrating young female photographers in ‘Through Her Eyes’ competition

Celebrating young female photographers in St Mary's Through Her Eyes competition

We are proud to announce the winners of our inaugural Through Her Eyes photography competition – a powerful celebration of how girls see and shape the world around them.

Open to all school age pupils at St Mary’s and in the local community, the competition invited young photographers to capture the world from a girl’s perspective – whether that meant a moment of curiosity, confidence, kindness, creativity or courage. The entries were bold, thoughtful and deeply personal, offering a compelling visual insight into the unique lens through which girls experience life.

In the Key Stage 1 category, first place was awarded to Emmeline (Year 2). The top spot in Key Stage 2 went to Helen (Year 3), while Emaan (Year 8) was named the winner of the Key Stage 3–4 category.

The competition drew an impressive range of submissions, and the judging panel was thoroughly impressed by the thoughtfulness and artistic vision shown by pupils. Congratulations to all those who took part and shared their inspiring work. The competition aligns with our long-standing mission to empower girls to thrive – both in school and beyond. By giving pupils the freedom to express themselves through photography, the initiative highlighted the school’s commitment to nurturing creativity, self-belief and voice in the next generation of young women.

Mrs Nicola Griffiths, Principal, said: “At St Mary’s, we believe that girls are remarkable and we relish every opportunity to celebrate their talents. This photography competition has been a powerful and inspiring showcase of creative thinking, emotional intelligence and individual perspective. It has challenged girls from St Mary’s and the wider community to see the world differently – and share what they see. Our judging panel, led by our Faculty Lead for the Creative Arts and Photography Instructor, had an incredibly tough job selecting the winners from such a strong field. Well done to everyone who took part – and a huge congratulations to the winners!”

Winners and runners-up will receive their awards and prizes at a special presentation during our upcoming Empowering Girls Talk on Saturday 11 October at the Senior School. They will be honoured by none other than Olympic medallist and track and field sprinter, Victoria Ohuruogu, who will present the awards and speak to pupils about her journey in sport and success.

This celebration not only honours the creativity of the pupils but reinforces the school’s commitment to building confidence, leadership and a spirit of excellence in every girl.
